Hunting

The Friends of the Cache River Watershed endorses hunting, based on current scientific data,  population estimates, and current laws, as legitimate recreation and an effective management tool for our wildlife resources.

Hunting and Fishing opportunities abound in the Cache River Watershed at locations on both public zand private land. The area includes a variety of habitats from floodplain and upland forests, to deepwater swamps and shallow wetlands, to agricultural and early successional fields. Games species include waterfowl, turkey, squirrels and rabbits. The Cache River and associated wetlands and blackwater sloughs also offer opportunities to catch crappie, bass, bluegill and other fish throughout the year. Special arrangements can be made to accommodate persons with disabilities by contacting the refuge.

All hunters and anglers must possess the proper permits and licenses required by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and follow all the rules and regulations set forth by the state each year for hunters and anglers.
